Wasted State Records was founded as a promotions company in the early days of 2004 with the sole intent of putting on gigs and promoting small bands. After a year of not very much at all Wasted State Promotions packed up, with one of its founders, Gaz Burnett, moving to Leeds to pursue his drumming, and the other, Toni Martone moving to Australia for a year to have a wee nose at the music industry workings in Melbourne.

Whilst away, Toni decided that the step forward Wasted State needed was to reinvent itself as a label and start to do things properly, more consistently and with a bit more effort, a lot more effort!

On his return from sunny sunny Australia, Toni teamed up with Sarah MacDiarmid to pull Wasted State up to date and get moving into the fast changing music scene.


With a new beginning the WS team had the chance to start from scratch with the company’s image and how things were run. From scouting bands to pushing bits of paper around a desk, everything has been re-done and the team now have purpose, dedication and a definite view on what they want to achieve.

Sneaky marketing, big money record labels and companies, half baked ideas, promoters fucking over bands, bands fucking over promoters, labels exploiting bands and many, many more problems make it hard for a new ‘Indie’ label. To overcome this, Wasted State have a set of rules and ethical guidelines that set them out from the rest.

Everybody involved with Wasted State, from the directors to the people handing out flyers, are there for one main reason. They live and breathe music and have the passion to work (most of the time without pay!!) without the need for someone to be on their backs all day.

Wasted State prides itself on really being in it for the music (cheese alert!) and not just to make some quick money at the expense of someone else. Making some money back would be great, because no one wants to be bankrupt!
